Helen Downes

I am an experienced private client solicitor with almost 30 years of helping individuals, families, business owners and trustees plan for the future with confidence. My work focuses on estate planning, wealth preservation and succession planning, supporting clients through some of life's most important decisions.

I was the first solicitor in Wales to achieve the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) Diploma and remain actively involved with STEP Wales, currently serving as Membership Secretary. I also hold Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT) Certificates of Competency in Personal Taxation and Inheritance Tax, Trusts and Estates, and I am a fully accredited Lifetime Lawyer. These qualifications reflect my commitment to providing expert, clear and compassionate advice.

Throughout my career, I have held senior leadership positions within the legal profession, including Partner and Joint Head of Private Client at a leading Cardiff law firm. Most recently, I spent ten years running my own successful boutique private client practice, building trusted relationships with clients and professional advisers and delivering tailored solutions to meet individual needs.

As Head of Personal Wealth and Succession Planning at Redkite Solicitors, I lead a specialist team dedicated to helping clients protect their assets, provide for future generations and achieve peace of mind. We take pride in delivering high-quality, practical advice in a way that is accessible and easy to understand.

I believe the best results are achieved when advisers work collaboratively, and I regularly work alongside clients' legal, tax and financial professionals to develop joined-up solutions that reflect their wider circumstances and long-term goals.

What matters most to me is helping clients feel informed, supported and confident. Estate and succession planning can often involve complex and emotional decisions, but I am passionate about making those conversations easier by providing clear guidance, genuine empathy and practical solutions. My aim is always to give clients the reassurance that their affairs are in order and their loved ones are protected for the future.

Outside of work, family is at the heart of everything I do, and I am a very proud mum to a wonderful teenage son. Music and the arts have always been a big part of my life, and I look forward to my weekly choir rehearsals as a chance to unwind and recharge. I'm also an enthusiastic theatre-goer and rarely pass up the opportunity to see a musical, opera or play. When it comes to holidays, you'll usually find me skiing down a piste, exploring the underwater world on a scuba diving adventure, relaxing on a sun-drenched beach, or enjoying a weekend break with family and friends.
